INDIAN PRIDE

Nancy Martin Bryan

Nancy Denise Martin Bryan is a member of the AHS Class of 1976.  She married Timothy Aaron Bryan, also AHS Class of 1976.  Her siblings (Michael James Martin, Class of 1064; Barbara Kathryn Martin, Class of 1971) and father (Marion Glenn Martin, Class of 1940) all graduated from Albany High School.   A long line of Indians!

The Albany High Times discovered that Nancy is the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Georgia, Inc.  when she made the request to be added to the email list to receive the monthly newsletter, News and Clues.   When we expressed interest in her work and the organization, she responded ... "We need the help in letting people in Albany know about us.  While we have been here for 30 years based out of Tifton, our Albany service is relatively new and small."

We asked for more information and from the informational documents she sent we gleaned the following .... "BBBS of South Georgia, Inc. is a private non-profit whose mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth, primarily through a professionally-supported One-To-One relationship with a caring adult, and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become responsible men and women by providing trained, committed volunteers and a program and services which enhance the volunteer efforts.

This mission is achieved through two One-To-One mentoring programs offered:

  1. The Big Brother Big Sisters program is community based with the volunteer mentor agreeing to see a youth once a week for at least a year enjoying activities together out in the local environment.  Examples would be doing homework together, attending a ball game, participating in community service opportunities, going to a concert, etc.

  2. The Buddies In School program is a school based mentoring opportunity where the Big Buddy will go to the school and mentor a student once a week during the school year, spending ½ to an hour of time.  Buddy Boxes are placed at each program site with educational games and other materials to foster a friendship where the Buddy encourages the student to improve in one or more of the four areas which serve as criteria for student referral:  Academics, Attendance, Attitude and/or Self Confidence.   Both programs follow standards and guidelines set by the national organization of which we are fully affiliated."
